Motor Vehicle Administration Expands Self-Service VEIP Kiosk Locations Across Maryland
GLEN BURNIE, MD –The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and Maryland Department of Environment today announced the expansion of Maryland’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) kiosk network, beginning with the addition of a second kiosk at the Gaithersburg VEIP location. The Gaithersburg kiosk is now available for customers, with additional kiosks planned at seven locations over the coming months. The expansion, which includes installations at new locations and additional kiosks at select existing sites, will provide customers with more convenient access across the state.
The expanded kiosk network supports the State of Maryland’s ongoing efforts to reduce harmful air pollution under the federal Clean Air Act and deliver a premier customer experience by making it easier to ensure vehicles are operating efficiently.
“Marylanders expect government services to be convenient and accessible, and the MVA is committed to a premier customer experience that saves valuable time while supporting cleaner air,” said Motor Vehicle Administrator Chrissy Nizer. “The VEIP kiosks gives customers the flexibility to complete emissions testing on their own schedule and is another way the MVA can meet customers where they are. We look forward to expanding this service for the convenience of more Marylanders.”
Locations for the kiosk expansion were selected based on data identifying areas with the greatest customer need. The second kiosk at Gaithersburg is now operational, with additional kiosks scheduled to be installed over the coming months at the following locations:
As additional kiosks become operational over the coming months, MVA will announce their availability on its social media channels and update the list of VEIP kiosks and testing locations on its website.
The VEIP kiosks also feature a new logo which reflects Maryland’s commitment to good environmental stewardship and conservation efforts. The new design emphasizes a shared responsibility for preserving clean air, land and water for all Marylanders.
While VEIP stations have set operating hours, VEIP kiosks are open 24/7, allowing customers to complete testing at their convenience and at a reduced rate. Today, an estimated 20% of emissions testing occurs at self-service kiosks.
MVA has created a "how to" video to assist customers with using the kiosk.
VEIP kiosk fees are $26 and the cost of full-service testing is $30. These fees support the Transportation Trust Fund, which is used to pay for transportation projects that enhance safety, maintenance and grow the state’s economy.
VEIP inspections are required in 14 of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions. As vehicle technology has improved, the State of Maryland has continued to modernize the VEIP program. New vehicles are exempt from testing until six years after titling and registration, while used vehicles are tested every two years. Eligible senior citizens, out-of-area military and people with disabilities may request VEIP waivers.
